The Development Center for Finance (DCF) successfully conducted a 2nd run of the Financial Statement Analysis seminar this year (2022) which was attended by eighty (80) participants on September 10, 17, 24, and October 1.

Prof. Diogenes Dy kicked off the seminar. Together with expectations setting, participants were given a roadmap on the entire Financial Statement Analysis seminar in Day 1. Afterwards, the asset and liability components of the statement of financial position were tackled, which was then reinforced through illustrative examples and discussions of real-life applications.

Day 2 was followed through by Prof. Mike Magana. Picking up on the previous session, he discussed the equity section of the balance sheet and afterwards, the income statement and the statement of cash flows. Illustrative exercises and corporate highlights were used to demonstrate how the various financial statements are prepared and how they are related to one another.

Financial statement analysis techniques were then taught by Sir Lester Aratea on Day 3. Being the meat of the seminar, the calculations and interpretations of financial ratios, specifically profitability, efficiency, liquidity, solvency, and cash flow ratios, were discussed. These were then applied to an actual subject company using its audited financial statements. Aside from quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis of financial statements was also covered.

On Day 4, Dr. Art Cayanan provided a comprehensive review of the past sessions prior to continuing with the discussion of financial statement analysis techniques, namely the common-size, trend, and break-even analyses. Under his guidance, the seminar was concluded with the participants utilizing all their learnings through case analyses on Philippine listed companies.
Some of the feedback from the participants about the 4-day seminar were as follows:
“The introductory sessions were succinct yet comprehensive enough for non-practitioners to be familiarized with the different types of FS and their components. Sir Don is an amazing instructor! I appreciate how he took the patience to answer everything clearly. He is also very calm and composed during the entire session, and able to sustain my attention and interest on the topics.”
“Similar to the first day, the second session explaining the basic accounting principles is very insightful for non-practitioners to be brought up to speed. Sir Mike knows the relevant laws relating to the accounting concepts. Helped us understand why we need to do things the way our accounting people does it.”
“Really enjoyed the session today. Kudos to Sir Lester for such a good job delivering the subject matter in a very structured and well-paced manner. Very informative session. The examples also helped provide real life scenarios which made it more relatable.”
“Professor Cayanan presented and explained the topics very well. Very insightful and interesting! Wonderful seminar. I will use this in my work. We really appreciate the patience of the lecturer in answering our questions.”
